Welcome! My name is Kaitlin Barnes and this is my digital portfolio as an educator in Houston, Texas.

I have experience working with a wide variety of learners, including gifted students, English Language Learners, students who receive special education services, and students who are members of the Deaf community. My favorite part of each school day is our read-aloud time, because I love the feeling of community that stems from reading and discussing an amazing book as a class. I am passionate about helping my students become lifelong readers and helping them find books that interest them, and I teach my class in a way that helps students to see themselves as readers.

I graduated from Rice University in 2014 with degrees in Sociology and Public Policy. In 2018, I received my Master's in Education from Johns Hopkins University. Prior to becoming a teacher, I held internships at the U.S. Department of Education and YES Prep Public Schools. Before joining Teach for America in 2015, I spent one year working for an education technology non-profit headquartered in Houston, where I learned more about curriculum design and the relationship between vendors and  districts. In my free time, I enjoy reading, thrift shopping, and watching The West Wing
